Texas Chainsaw Massacre

Texas Chainsaw Massacre presents two seemingly unrelated men recounting their memories. On one screen, a Caucasian man with a British accent recounts the 1974 film The Texas Chain Saw Massacre entirely from memory; on the other screen is the full footage of Brett Kavanaugh’s opening statement addressing sexual assault allegations during his Supreme Court confirmation hearings. A custom program replaces their spoken words with text slides accompanied by so-called elevator music. On the right, the text slides are punctuated by moments of silence from the proceedings, as Kavanaugh pauses, catches his breath, or composes himself between words. The work cuts between the two channels like a broken clock, producing intermittent moments of connection and disconnection. Through this algorithmic editing, both Kavanaugh’s voice and the film’s smug violence are muted, while their underlying structures of power, performance, and memory are brought into sharper relief.
